Tracing the Ice Age Glaciers on a Green Vacation in Quebec, Canada
Le Jardin des Glaciers evokes the last ice age, climate change and the migration of the first inhabitants of North America.
Located along the St. Lawrence River in the beautiful forested region of Baie-Comeau, Quebec, Canada, the Jardin des Glaciers is a vacation destination where a family can spend a few hours or several days learning and exploring the fascinating world of glaciers.
Do you speak French ?
Most people know that French is the first language of the province of Quebec. Since this article is written in English, the Glacier Gardenappears here as The glacier garden or simply The garden.
Although the signs in Quebec are mostly in French, it’s important to note that the majority of people you’ll meet in this province will be fluent in English with a delicious French accent. It is so good.
A little history of the land
20,000 years ago, much of North America was covered in an ice cap seven times deeper than the height of the Empire State Building. It’s about two miles of vertical ice. If that doesn’t impress you, wait to hear your garden guide explain what happened next!
Your journey begins in the multimedia zone
Your Garden adventure begins in a church building that has been converted into a huge earth science and anthropology laboratory called the Glacier exploration station.
The Multimedia Zone program inside the Exploration Station is an I-Max-like extravaganza – expertly augmented with extra-sensory sounds, sensations, sights and lights.
Starting with a multimedia experience called 20,000 years under the iceyour virtual expedition elevator takes you 3km into the heart of the glacier to explore the effects of thousands of years of climate change.
Condensing eternities into minutes, the ice sheet disappears before your eyes. As the ice recedes, you walk with the first to enter North America across the frozen strait from Asia. Intriguing stuff, very cleverly executed.
As you walk around the Exploration Station, spend time in the Cyber Center and its Research Room and play on the center’s ten interactive workstations. They will help you deepen your newly acquired knowledge of glaciers and climate change.
Follow your guide through the remarkable Alcove Corridor of frescoes and murals and listen to the exciting stories that are sure to add to the enjoyment of what you have already learned.
get out
When you finally leave the Glacier Exploration Station, you’re ready for three post-glacier tours of the great green spaces of Baie-Comeau, Quebec.
The Nature Area
There are three 2-3 hour tours to the informative and interesting natural area.
The valley of shells
The valley of shells is several kilometers from the ocean; nevertheless, the eye catches sight of a huge hill of shells stacked on top of each other and reaching 150 feet high – right in the middle of a dense forest.
This unusual wonder was created by a post-glacial sea that existed around 10,000 years ago. The receding water gathered shell specimens of a particular weight and size and moved them into an obstructed area which took the shells out of the normal erosion pattern, creating a “mountain” of shells isolated as the sea receded to its present level.
Visitors walk up the steep hillside and pick up hundreds of shell specimens with their bare hands – enthralled by the knowledge that what they hold lived over 10 millennia ago.
Ice Age peoples
This interesting electric shuttle tour takes you into the local woods to experience first-hand how the early peoples of North America lived and worked.
18,000 years ago, our ancestors migrated from Asia across the Bering Ice Strait in search of food. the Gardens has skilfully reconstructed four thematic camps containing period lodges and tools. This tour is a great way to appreciate the difficult way of life of the ancients.
Traces of the Glaciers
You don’t want to miss this motorboat tour on the St. Lawrence River. Your guide will point out the spectacular glacial grooves carved into the rocky cliffs along the river bank. You will see gigantic furrows scarred by the extreme pressure of the slow-moving Laurentian Ice Cap – the largest glacier in the world.
You may spot seals and other marine mammals that now live in the waters of the St. Lawrence. They are the descendants of those who crossed the Arctic Sea of Goldthwait more than 12,000 years ago.
The adrenaline zone
Yes, the Jardin des Glaciers has something to delight lovers of outdoor thrills. A via ferrata (railway) meanders along the St. Lawrence just 10 feet from the sea. Supported by wire rope lifelines, the views from this activity are breathtaking.
You can also try one of the 8 maritime ziplines or perhaps enjoy the thrill of abseiling or hiking over 20 miles of scenic trails. You can scale a rock climbing wall or paddle enthusiastically in a sea kayak. We think you get the picture.
If you are going to
Baie-Comeau and the Jardin des Glaciers are located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River about 425 miles northeast of Montreal. For more information on Le Jardin des Glaciers, visit their website at http://www.jardindesglaciers.ca/homepage-1.html
There are several hotels in the area. We stayed at Hotel Le Manoir. The accommodations were quite comfortable and the food was excellent.
Have a good trip!
