Promote Your Website: Search Tools

Many companies, after having spent considerable sums on

development of their websites assume that once the website

published on the Internet, people will flock to it and, as a result,

don’t take website promotion as seriously as the development part

of this one. Today, with millions of websites, regardless of quality

your website is, if you don’t promote it effectively, you won’t

get the exposure your site deserves.

Effective website promotion starts with site submission

to the various research tools available on the Internet. There are two

different types of research tools: search engines and directories.

Search engines index their ads based on information

scavenged by their spiders that crawl the internet following

links constantly looking for new websites. Directory listings

are compiled by human editors from URLs submitted to the

phone book. If your website is listed in directories, you may be

sure that spiders from different search engines sooner or later

will index your site. That’s why you should start submitting your

website first from search directories.

Search Directories

Of all the search directories available on the Internet, Yahoo!

and DMOZ are the most important.

Open Directory Project or DMOZ

DMOZ is the second largest human-compiled search directory on the

Internet after Yahoo! Open Directory Project is a huge web directory

of internet resources. All submissions to the directory are evaluated

by volunteer editors. There is no fee to pay for inclusion

in the directory. As a human-edited directory, it may take longer

one month to have your site evaluated. Once you are listed in the DMOZ,

within two weeks to two months, your website will start appearing on

search engines like AOL Search, Teoma, HotBot, Google, Lycos,

AllTheWeb, Excite, Go2Net and a number of regional search engines.

Currently around 354 different search engines and portals use data

of the Open Directory project. This is one of the main reasons why

you should consider submitting your website to DMOZ.

Submitting your site to directories is a little trickier than submitting

to search engines.

The following rules are common to almost all directories:

– Check if your website is already in the directory

– Write an objective description of your website

– Search for the specific subcategory in the directory hierarchy

– Follow submission rules as specified

Be sure to follow these rules when adding your website to DMOZ.

This will improve your chances of getting your website accepted and reduce

processing time.

Yahoo!

Yahoo! is by far the number one destination for Internet users.

Although Yahoo! is provided by Google, many

people still prefer to browse Yahoo! directory to find

everything they are looking for. This makes an inclusion to Yahoo!

quite valuable directory for e-commerce sites. Yahoo! currently

charges an annual fee of US$299 for each website submitted. Expenses

is non-refundable, which means that if, for some reason, Yahoo! declines

to add your website in its directory you will not receive your money

back! The only thing Yahoo! guarantees is that publishers

review your submission within seven days and send you a response.

Should you consider submitting your site to Yahoo! ? Everything depends

about the type of business you are in. Some sites receive a

overwhelming number of traffic from Yahoo!, others barely get

anybody. My suggestion: list your website in Yahoo! directory for

a year and see the result. If you feel comfortable with the result

you receive – continue. If the result is not satisfactory, you

can still cancel their service after one year.

Looks smart

Although it is the third largest directory on the Internet as

the LookSmart search portal is not so popular. However, it provides

directory listings to search MSN, About.com, Infospace, Inktomi

and others. It’s probably still the best way to get a high ranking

in MSN search. LookSmart is a paid service. You pay $49

submission fee for site review by their editors and 15 Cents

for each click. Pay per click minimum monthly payment is

US$15.

For non-commercial sites, LookSmart has a partner directory named

“Zealous”. Zeal is a community directory for Internet users. To

submit a site to Zeal you must first become a member by passing

a quiz test. The reason I mention Zeal here is that you can

actually submit a non-commercial portion of your site to Zeal and

receive an appearance in all places where LookSmart ads

show up, without paying a pay-per-click fee.

Other directories

Other small but notable directories you should consider are

joeAnt, GoGuides and Gimpsy. Don’t expect heavy traffic from

these directories; however, they will help improve your link

popularity. Link popularity is a concept that means- how much

the sites have links pointing to your website. Link popularity

is important because the ranking of your website in search results

largely depends on it.

Search engine

Search engines use special programs to crawl the Internet and

index web pages. These robot programs are called “Bot” or “Spider”.

Spiders crawl the Internet using links. This is why it is so

important to have links to your website. When you search,

search engines show you results extracted from

servers, where all indexed web pages are cached. Only

when you click on a link from the search result, you see the real

Web page.

The most important search engines are Google, Altavista, AllTheWeb,

Teoma, Lycos and MSN, HotBot, AOL Search, etc.

Google

No doubt that Google is the best search engine available on the

Internet today. According to Google, they have indexed more than 3.5

billion pages so far! More and more Internet users are inclined to use

Google because it has great search enhancement features and you

can always expect relevant and quality search results.

You can submit your link using Google’s Add URL page located at http://www.google.com/addURL.html. However, if you have links

pointing to your site on other sites, you can be sure

that Google’s spider, Googlebot will eventually come to index

your site. Contrary to popular belief, once your site is indexed,

there is no need to resubmit your pages to Google, even if you

updated pages. If, although it is not necessary, you submit

your website to Google, only submit the index page, it will find

the rest of the pages using the links anyway.

Altavista

Once powerful, Altavista began to lose ground to other research

motors to a large extent. Submitting to Altavista is quite simple!

From the home page, click on “Submit a site” located at

bottom of the page. You have two choices: either you

can choose the “Basic Submit” service, which is free or for a

immediate inclusion, you can choose “Express Inclusion”

a service.

To prevent automatic submission of URLs, on the submission page

Altavista added a submission code that must be inserted manually

with the URL. The Express Inclusion service costs 39 USD for

the first URL for six months.

AllTheWeb

This search engine has become very popular lately. He has a very

large database. AllTheWeb has very sophisticated search functions

such as searches for pages linked to a given page, searches within

URLs or page titles, and searches limited by page size. He offers

research results and technology to Lycos and Ebay. Submission to

AllTheWeb is quite simple. Use the following link page to submit

your URL: [http://www.alltheweb.com/add_URL.php] If you need a

express inclusion, you must use the “Lycos InSite” service of

Terra-Lycos. The rate is US$35 for a full year’s inclusion.

Teoma

If you care about Teoma, a highly publicized search engine, which is

actually an additional Ask Jeeves search engine you can use

its paid inclusion program located at http://ask.ineedhits.com/sitesubmit.asp?id=30270.

It charges $30 per year for the first URL and $18 for the others

each.

inktom

You may not have heard of Inktomi, but many popular search engines

use Inktomi results such as AOL, Excite, Go.com, HotBot,

IWon, Overture to name a few. For a secondary search result, even

MSN uses it! Yahoo! recently purchased Inktomi. Which means that

very soon even Yahoo! could prioritize search results

coming from her. Inktomi provides paid inclusion service.

Inktomi sells its inclusion service exclusively through its

reseller partners. You can find them here: [http://www.inktomi.com/products/web_search/submit.html] Expenses

is $39 per URL for one year and $25 for subsequent URLs.
