Liberal Arts – A New Dimension Towards Career Opportunities
According to the reality, we often opt for the same professions, which had been adopted by our fathers. We try to adopt such a career which is in demand and offers opportunities in terms of employment prospectus. We try to concentrate on influential areas, which our friends have studied or opted for so far, and this leads to the growth of narrow thinking, deception and bewilderment. Physician, Chartered Accountant, Computer Engineer, Businessman, etc. are undoubtedly reputable careers over the past few decades, but the growth and demand for new dimensional careers are far more superior, ethical, and claimed worldwide to provide better opportunities in the decades to come. Have we ever looked towards the multidimensional career field like liberal art in the modern age, which will be more demanding in the future?
Liberal art means open-mindedness, free-thinking, creativity, etc. Teaching, law, art, music, photography, architecture, drama, social work, philosophy, media studies, sociology and many more are part of art liberal.
First world countries have been focusing on liberal art for many decades, but in our country, people are opting for the same fashionable careers, even though they know that the growth of old careers has been reduced.
We have never focused on preserving our history, our culture and demonstrating our creativity, opting for liberal arts subjects in our graduation and master’s studies, because in the last decades,
Arts degree, no doubt was the horrible option for Pakistani man and woman in the past, due to narrow thinking and lack of opportunities; but now the new generation must seek out this new field of innovative and liberal art.
Liberal art has a 360º dimensional path to seek unlimited career opportunities in the future.
In this article, I would like to focus on one of the areas of liberal art, that is, architecture.
It really says,
“Architecture is rooted in science but its heart is in the arts”
Because their designs must respond to social, cultural and environmental issues, using the rich potential of science and technology to achieve quality in the design of spaces, shapes and details.
Architecture is known as “the professional creative problem solver of this modern age”. You will learn to work with others to imagine and design buildings, from the smallest to the largest; you will solve problems, make drawings, build models and refine them in your level of studies.
An architect could also learn how to design, build, draft a project, research and plan a site.
If you like building models; Draw plans of your building ideas; Research and writing articles; learn mathematics; learn about the preservation and restoration of old buildings; Study architectural styles and history; Think about how buildings affect individuals and society, then you would have a bright future in this area of creativity.
If you are absolutely captivated by buildings; If you like to be creative; whether you can handle (handle the lessons of) public criticism; if you are motivated and well organized; If you enjoy taking on new challenges, you should consider an architecture degree.
The following skills and knowledge are required to become a successful architect
· He/She must have a strong background in physics and mathematics.
· He/She must be a good designer.
· He/She must be creative.
· He/She must have analytical and problem-solving skills.
· He/She must have an aesthetic sensibility and a demanding imagination.
· He/She must be a keen observer of the public requirements of the buildings and the designed environment as a whole.
· He/She must have knowledge of the properties and uses of materials, manufacturing processes, building structure and the sequence of construction operations.
· He/She must have leadership skills.
· He/She must enjoy working in a team.
· He/She must have a clear vision.
· He/She must value critical opinions.

Ideal architecture candidates should have a standard level 12 in particular (pre-engineering), or “A” levels with the following subjects:
English: Essential for communicating ideas and thought processes with clarity.
MATHEMATICS: Essential requirement as mathematical techniques may be needed to handle complex statistical data.
PHYSICAL: Essential because it allows a better understanding of the physical environment in which the architect is designing.
COMPUTER STUDIES: It is good if he/she has computer studies as an optional subject or basic computer training. You will spend the majority of your study time doing hands-on activities in the design studio, such as drafting, model-making, and computer-aided design (CAD).
It takes around 6-7 years of intensive training to complete your undergraduate and postgraduate degree in architecture in most institutions in Pakistan and around the world.
Baccalaureate in 5 years.
Master 1 year
1-2 years of PhD
Uet (Lahore) and international universities also offer a 3-year degree in architecture.
From where can I continue my studies?
There are 5 institutes, which are registered with PCTATP (Pakistan Council of Architects and Planners)
1. University of Karachi.
2. Indus Valley School of Arts.
3. Dawood Karachi College of Engineering.
4. National College of Arts, Lahore.
