How to Become an Orthodontist in Ontario
Becoming an orthodontist in Ontario requires 10 years of post-secondary education.
– Bachelor of Science in 4 years
– 4-year dental school
– 2 year Higher School of Orthodontics
An aspiring orthodontist must first complete a four-year bachelor of science degree ensuring that all dental school prerequisite courses are completed. Individual prerequisite courses may vary by school, but generally include basic science, including courses in biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. Interested applicants are advised to check each school’s websites for requirements, as different schools may have different requirements.
After completing (or for some schools, while undertaking) an undergraduate bachelor of science, a person can take a DAT (Dental Aptitude Test) administered by the Canadian Dental Association and apply to dental school.
Upon admission to a dental school in Ontario, the student must successfully complete four years of complementary studies that would enable him to become a practicing dentist.
In Ontario, getting accepted into dental school is very competitive. As a result, it is not uncommon for students to travel abroad to the United States or the United Kingdom to peruse their dentistry degrees.
Upon completion of a four-year program in dentistry, students may choose to enroll in the Graduate School of Orthodontics at a Canadian school (eg, University of Western Ontario). This application process is highly selective and only the best applicants are accepted into the program which includes the final two years of study.
As you can see, orthodontists go through many years of training in order to have the qualifications and skills required to treat patients.
