Best/Worst NBA Games: December 4-10, 2005

Sunday (12/4)

Better:

Celtics @ Knicks: The Knicks, especially at home, never stop games. If they blow up teams or vice versa, they come back or allow a comeback. While Marbury and Pierce may be the main attraction, there are plenty of excellent newcomers to this game. Channing Frye is Rookie of the Year so far, and Al Jefferson and Delonte West easily make up for the intensity. by Payton and Walker.

Finalist:

T’Wolves @ Kings: It’s an NBA law that Dallas, Sacramento and Minnesota must meet at least once in the playoffs. It was the Mavs and Kings last year, so can the Timberwolves make a playoff comeback? The Kings’ strength is in teams, as Stojakovic, Sbdur-Rahim, Bibby and Wells cannot lead a team on their own. It’s the opposite of Minnesota, with Garnett being the only thing preventing a total season meltdown.

To extinguish:

Hawks @ Suns: The Hawks lost a lot of time in Phoenix last year, and Atlanta hasn’t changed enough to prevent that from happening again. The Hawks’ run-and-gun offense matches Phoenix, which would normally make the game more competitive. However, the Hawks are terrible at just about anything, so stopping Nash from a double-double is highly unlikely.

Monday (12/5)

Better:

Heat @ Clippers: Brand and Wade are the leaders of their teams, but the deciding factor is the supporting cast. Walker and Haslem have been far too inconsistent without Shaq and need to combine to get past Chris Kaman. Posey will square off well with Cuttino Mobley, while Maggette and Wade will balance each other out.

Finalist:

Spurs @ Magic: The saving grace for Orlando is that so far they have delivered at home, but facing San Antonio is an important and necessary encounter. If the Magic can compete with the Spurs, they can outperform any other team at home. While Orlando has done surprisingly well against San Antonio in recent years, no Grant Hill is doing badly this time around.

To extinguish:

Bucks @ Jazz: Utah is 4-4 on the road, but oddly 2-6 at home. Those 2 wins were blowouts though. Eastern teams like Indiana are still struggling to travel to play at the Delta Center, and the Jazz need to start winning at home. A quality team must at least have a winning record at home, regardless of attendance or injury situation.

Tuesday (12/6)

Better:

Mavericks @ Pacers: With Josh Howard out, the Mavericks’ small defensive presence is diminished. Unlike the Lakers or the Sixers, the Mavs do very well when their star Dirk Nowitski has a monster game. Jermaine O’Neal will defend Nowitski, but O’Neal is not a good defender of long-range players. Aside from Artest, this game features tough, defensive-minded players who don’t play great defense as much as they should.

Finalist:

Celtics @ Rockets: T-Mac is back, and Houston is known for having bad starts despite being the worst in the West when it comes to new stuff. Without Pierce or McGrady on either team, the Celtics and Rockets would be finished. Rafer Alston is coming back to Houston which really helps. If you thought a Jeff Van Gundy team was slow, wait until you see a Van Gundy team with no PG.

To extinguish:

Hornets @ Grizzlies: No team has a more unsung hero than Pau Gasol, whose Grizzlies team goes pretty much unnoticed with the resurgence of the Clippers. Tackling Bobby Jackson and Damon Stoudemire’s injury/drug problem was undoubtedly risky, even if it’s Jerry West’s forte. They did better than Jason Williams at Point and should go through Chris Paul and Speedy Claxton.

Wednesday (12/7)

Better:

Suns @ Warriors: The West is deep, but deep in this case is bad for the West. Not too long ago, Portland won 49 games and was the No. 7 seed. Today, a 49-win team is watching the conference finals. Both the Suns and the Warriors are below. Golden State should continue hovering around 0.500. Phoenix just needs to wait for Stoudamire to come back.

Finalist:

Bucks @ 76ers: A lot has changed since Milwaukee beat Phili on day one of the season: Terry Stotts left with many starting lineups, and it’s unclear if it will be Andrew Bogut or Joe Smith claiming the position C. With Kevin Ollie back, Iverson was expected to play fewer PG minutes. Still, Iverson’s assists have actually increased, showing how he differs from Kobe Bryant.

To extinguish:

Nets @ Bobcats: The Charlotte Bobcats on the winning side of a blowout have been rare to say the least. The least to expect from teams like Charlotte is that they will play hard. New Jersey has battled every team in the Pacific Division, including the Lakers. The Bobcats themselves beat the Knicks at home. New Jersey isn’t too different for me to think it’s a good game.

Thursday (12/8) [There are only 2 games on TV on Thursday]

Better:

Rockets @ Kings: Teams like the Clippers, Warriors and Timberwolves rise in the playoff mix; some Western teams have to get out. The Rockets and Kings are trying to prove they’re not one of those declining teams. Sacramento tries to justify losing Chris Webber, but Toronto wanted Carter gone and look how bad they are. They still have goalscorers, so was signing Abdur-Rahim really essential?

Finalist:

Wizards @ Pacers: No Kwame Brown means no problem, it’s Larry Hughes gone that hurts Washington. Antonio Daniels led the NBA in assist-to-TO ratio and is adequate defensively. That still doesn’t make up for Hughes, who averaged more than 20 points in addition to being the All-NBA Defense 1st team last year. Both teams reached the semi-finals last year, and both have a lot to improve on. Indiana lost a pair of home blowouts to Charlotte and the Clippers: will the Wizards be next?

Friday (12/9)

Better:

Lakers @ Bulls: For years it was a power game. So much so that last year was the first time in 20 years that the Lakers’ trip to Chicago didn’t warrant a sale. Attendance is up in the League, and the recent attraction to the massive number of shots Kobe has taken should once again make it a sellout. With everyone watching, will Kobe limit the shots?

Finalist:

Pistons @ Warriors: The Warriors remember more than their huge loss to San Antonio recently. They will face Spurs later in the year, but they will only face Detroit once. Expect Golden State to come out with intensity. They have to win the battle of the boards and it won’t be easy against Detroit. An offensive one-and-down will not work; they will definitely need offensive rebounds.

To extinguish:

Celtics @ Spurs: Boston is the only NBA team not to win on the road, so playing the Spurs is an automatic loss. Tony Parker will educate Delonte West on transition defense and Bruce Bowen will stop Pierce enough to take the lead in the 20s in the 3rd Quarter.

Saturday (12/10)

Better:

Nuggets @ Magic: The most memorable moment of these 2 teams was Tim Hardaway throwing a television on the field. While we can’t expect that from this game, we can anticipate a weak frontcourt performance from the Nuggets. Dwight Howard is the solid midfield player before Orlando has been looking for Shaq, now they just need a center that can score.

Finalist:

Cavaliers @ Bucks: Cleveland is heading to the second darkest arena in the NBA after Madison Square Garden. The Cavs are a better team, but are at the back of a back-to-back and are at the end of a short West Coast swing. Milwaukee needs a collective score between Ford, Redd and Simmons to win.

To extinguish:

Lakers @ T’Wolves: Phil Jackson wants Lamar Odom to improve on his 13 ranged shots per game. We’ll have to wait, as Odom won’t exactly be motivated to show up against Kevin Garnett. Phil doesn’t often play against rookies, but he’s going to have to start playing Bynem more minutes. He will have to realize that the development of the players comes before the attempt to win.
