Movie The Devil Made Me Do It: The Conjuring-3 Has All The Scares, But A Weaker Storyline!

The third installment in the highly acclaimed “The Conjuring series” and the eighth film in the Conjuring Universe Horror franchise – The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – has been prepped for release in September 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed until June 2021, when it released simultaneously in the US and on HBO Max. Unfortunately, it could not be released again in Indian theaters due to the pandemic. Since the runtime of the HBO Max show was very short, Indian fans of the franchise wondered where to watch the film, given how thrilled and intrigued they were with the haunted house stories of The Conjuring ( 2013) and The Conjuring-2 (2016) starring the beloved duo of paranormal investigators Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren, brilliantly played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in all the films of the trilogy and in one of the films of the Conjuring franchise Universe. At last. Amazon Prime Video started streaming this movie from December 15, 2021, and horror “fun” has come back strong in India.

As usual, the story of this film is also based on a real court case in 1981 where the murder defendant, Arne Johnson, pleaded not guilty on the pretext that “The devil made it happen” because he claimed he was demonically possessed. by committing the act; this type of defense plea is for the first time in the history of trials in the United States. Ed and Lorraine Warren testified for Arne as they were convinced of demonic possession and gave all their evidence in terms of captured camera footage and video. However, as such a premise could never have a legal basis, the accused was found guilty and sentenced to 15 to 20 years’ imprisonment; but he got out of prison in five years because of his exemplary behavior and that he married his girlfriend while still in prison. A dry legal proceeding can never be a suitable subject for a horror thriller movie and hence a thrilling storyline and storyline have been built around the case.

The film opens with the scariest scene in the film and possibly one of the scariest scenes in horror movie history. The scene depicts the exorcism of a little boy, possibly around 10 years old, named David Glatzel with the presence of the stricken family, Ed and Lorraine and the exorcist. The chaotically horrifying developments that ensue are better watched than explained, with the result that Ed gets injured and has a heart attack while the character of Arne Johnson (played by Ruairi O’Connor), boyfriend of the David’s older sister, Debbie Glatzel (played by Sarah Catherine), looks the violent David in the eye and invites the demon to leave David and possess him, which, incredibly, happens. In my experience of horror movies this is a new twist as it raises a few questions: it seems to make the role of exorcists rather dubious and that a demon or ghost supposedly possesses someone with a purpose precise and therefore, why should he leave his prized victim! Either way, this was needed as a prologue for real-life Arne Johnson to continue murdering someone and being put on trial.

Compared to the absolutely absorbing and tension-filled first two films of the trilogy, the third lacks a narrative flow that is hampered by flashbacks, jerky cuts, and scenes left half-processed, jumping to other scenes and then returning to the old. This can be construed as the director’s stylistic treatment, but it doesn’t help the storytelling keeping in mind the viewers’ continued involvement. For example, Ed Warren who suffered a heart attack probably rested for about a month (not clearly stated) during which time Arne’s demon preferred not to do anything excruciating. However, just as Ed recovers with a telepathic dream, he communicates to Lorraine to warn the police of an impending tragedy at the home of Arne’s employer and landlord. And inevitably, Arne, in a sudden crisis of possession, murders the owner and is arrested by the police.

Now comes the real twist in the story: Lorraine, with her intuitive and psychic superpowers, visualizes a dark connection between Arne’s act and the murder and suicide of two young girls in recent days. Police had yet to find the body of the second girl who allegedly killed her friend in a similar type of demonic possession fit and then took her own life. So, for the first time in the history of the trilogy, the police join the investigation with the paranormal help of Ed and Lorraine, eventually finding the submerged body of the second girl as Lorraine leads them through a dramatic game. and a light and shadow. scene, which deserves to be watched.

With the “connection” confirmed, Lorraine and Ed revisit David’s house, and Lorraine discovers a witch totem in the house’s underground chambers, filled with rats. The occult practices angle enters here, again for the first time, and Lorraine, convinced that the connection works both ways and that she is completing a curse involving more murders, sets out to Search for the Source of Evil – If it was an evil spirit or an evil human being with supernatural powers, it should be avoided here, lest it become a spoiler. While the first half of the film is very engaging and filled with tension, the second half becomes rather predictable. The climax, unfortunately, fails to shock viewers.

But the film is hugely worth watching thanks to the intense performances, as usual, of the couple, Wilson and Farmiga, as well as the jumps that come when you least expect it and don’t come when you expects it, leaving viewers guessing, especially a creepy delightful scene of David jumping on a bubbling, water-filled mattress and then something unexpected happens to him. The sequel, different from the other two as mentioned above, reminds us of a brilliant South Korean horror, mystery and suspense movie “The Wailing” which we talked about recently.

“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” is not directed by James Wan who created the Conjuring Universe horror franchise with his Atomic Monster Productions and Warner Bros. Entertainment’s New Line Cinema, completing the 20-year effort led by Tony DeRosa-Grund. and his team to make a series of films about the supernatural records of Ed and Lorraine Warren, and direct the first film in the franchise “The Conjuring” in 2013. The first company’s huge commercial success led to the production of supernatural horror sequels and prequels follow one another: Annabelle in 2014, The Conjuring-2 in 2016, Annabelle Creation in 2017, The Nun in 2018, The Curse of La Llorona in 2019, Annabelle Comes Home in 2019 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021; the latter is directed by Michael Chaves who made his directorial debut with a franchise film, “The Curse of La Llorona.” The Conjuring Universe became the second highest grossing horror franchise in Hollywood history and one of the most critically acclaimed. Almost all eight films were huge commercial successes worldwide with positive to mixed reviews. The franchise is currently working on two more horror films, with the first titled “The Crooked Man” and the title of the second film, which would be a sequel to “The Nun”, to be announced.
