Smart Drinking – Forget the Hangover

There’s no doubt that everyone has heard of many ways to prevent or cure a hangover, but who knows better than a college student. All the ins and outs of smart consumption come at a price; First, someone has to buy the booze and, let’s just say, it would save everyone time if my employer just made my paycheck payable to the local liquor store. I enjoy my party time and have spent a lot of time researching both how to prevent and cure the ever dreaded hangover.

Let’s start with the saying “Booze before beer, you’re in the clear. Beer before booze, never sicker.” I will admit that I never gave much importance to this saying, but part of it comes from age. We all know toddlers bounce off walls like seemingly unharmed rubber balls. As you get older, falling off your bike hurts more, getting out of bed hurts more, and who can deny that unlike whiskey, hangovers get worse with age. I wouldn’t classify myself as old I’m 22 but when I was a few years younger I could drink vodka like water and wake up the next morning ready to run a few miles but it seems that things don’t work the same way anymore. Maybe those years of reckless behavior are catching up with me, but maybe the saying is starting to hold water. I recently discovered, quite by accident, that it actually contains some truth. At least for me it does.

On December 31, 2016, the festivities start early and I feel a little more sophisticated than the regular Miller Lite. So I drink a myriad of mixed drinks and with my pocket BAC meter I blew a 0.09 before the end of the year. I thought for sure I was going to feel this in the morning and so I decided to party and embrace the new year as it came to me. The party lasts well past midnight and I switch to beer around 2am. For the next 7 hours, I drink beer while the fire burns in the yard, the dark hours come to an end. The sun comes up and at 9 am I decide it’s time to go to bed and head inside. I didn’t know I fell asleep in the hallway, but let’s just say I left. My sister wakes me up and throws a blanket on her bedroom floor for me and I sleep in it for 2 hours until my girlfriend picks me up on her way to work. I crawl into my own bed after she drops me off at home and wake up at 2:45 p.m. feeling refreshed. Funnily enough, starting the night with alcohol helped me prevent what could have been one of the worst hangovers in human history.

This next one that I had never heard of and that I kind of invented on my own. Activated charcoal pills, available at most stores and almost guaranteed at your local pharmacies, when taken before you start drinking and after you finish drinking, will prevent your hangover but do nothing to affect the level. of buzz you get from your party night, in my experience it might even improve it a bit!

Finally one that I had forgotten for a while and with the discovery of the charcoal pills I haven’t noticed any forgetfulness it’s just drink a big glass of water before bed it will replace much of the water you lost the day before and help your body maintain adequate water levels.
