A Eureka Tent Was My 7 Year Old’s Favorite Birthday Present

My son just turned 7 this week. Surprisingly, her favorite birthday present was a Eureka tent. We enrolled him in Cubs a few months ago. My wife and I agree that Scouting is a good life experience for our boy. Which is fine because otherwise I’d have to sneak her to meetings. My son, Jan, is a bit of a ham. He loves attention and will get it anyway. When I started taking him fishing or hiking, he looked scared. I think he was just acting to get attention, because in other situations he seems pretty fearless. Like running through the woods in the dark… I’ll finish this story in a minute. So my son was pretty excited about being a Cub Scout. At his age, scouting is all about having fun and getting kids to learn something without them realizing it and running away covering their ears.

For Jan’s 7th birthday, her grandmother went online to the scouting supply store and bought her a Class A uniform and other scouting supplies, including the BSA 75th Anniversary Akela 2-Person Eureka Tent, which is no longer available. Jan’s mom and I bought her… toys. We figured we’d have him open Grandma’s presents first, thinking he’d like them but he’d want toys, so we saved the remote control helicopter, video game, and transformers for last. Well, we should have done the reverse, who knew. After opening everything up, the first thing he wanted to do was pitch the tent.

So we got out and started unpacking it. Of course, Jan wanted to do everything, even if he didn’t know what he was doing. I have to hand it to him though, after a few minutes he got most of it figured out. He wasn’t strong enough to bend the posts to insert the pins, but I was there to help him with that. Once I inserted the pins into the poles, he started attaching the sides of the tents to the poles. I have to tell you the quick clips, shock cord poles and ring pin/pole features are really awesome. They facilitate installation and dismantling. I was really surprised once we installed it. The thing is huge for a 7 year old. I’m sure it will last him until he’s a full BoyScout, especially since it’s made by Eureka. Most of you probably already know that a 2 person tent will only fit 1 person comfortably, as you need space for your gear. Well, Jan definitely had plenty of room. The dogs also liked it.

The next day, I had to rush home after work at the end of the day because Jan’s Cub Scout troop had planned a camping trip to Starkey Park. Starkey Park is a great campground by the way. It is located in New Port Richey, Florida, approximately 45 minutes from Tampa Bay. It’s a good thing that Jan and I had familiarized ourselves with the tent the night before, because by the time I brought us there, it was already getting dark. Making camp wasn’t too difficult even though the light was scarce. When the troop leader stopped to say hello, he noticed that we had set up two tents and looked a bit confused. He thought it was really strange that Jan was sleeping alone. I just told him that Jan was very independent and didn’t want to share his new tent. After that, we started making a fire, which didn’t take long. Jan decided he wanted to move his tent a few yards away from the fire and before I could say anything he pulled the pegs out and moved everything back. Couldn’t have done that with my old pop tent. This ring and pin/pole feature is really cool.

This is the part where my son gets his first black eye. It’s that special moment in a boy’s life when he realizes that getting hurt isn’t as bad as being afraid of getting hurt. Jan saw his best friend two campsites away from us and ran after him, completely ignoring my calls. You’d think it’s common sense not to run around in the woods in the dark (unless you’re being chased by a madman with a machete), unfortunately common sense isn’t that common among children. Jan tripped over a log and fell on a tree stump. He caught it just below his left eye. Half an inch taller and his nickname, “Jan the Pirate” would carry real weight. Jan stood up holding her eye, which freaked me out a bit. Luckily, it wasn’t as bad as my overactive paternal imagination thought. I was relieved when I saw that his eye was still very intact, but I knew right away that he was going to have a minnow.

Jan took it like a man, I couldn’t believe it. He didn’t cry or anything, he just had a little attitude because he was embarrassed that he fell. After Jan reluctantly let me look at his wound, he entered his tent and closed the doors and windows. He thought the other boys would laugh at him. One of the den mothers brought us some ice cream to reduce the swelling. We gave Jan the ice cream and told him about the tent with the prospect of roasting marshmallows. To Jan’s surprise, and mine, all the other boys thought Jan was the toughest scout there due to his lack of tears; and even some of the older boys admitted they would have cried.

The next morning, before breakfast at the lodge, Jan and I packed our bags. We ate and did some activities and played baseball with the other Cub Scouts. I had a little trouble with him when it was time to go, until I told him we had to go to another birthday party (big families are best). After we got home, I told Jan that we needed to clean all our camping gear. I could listen to moans and moans about it, until I told him he was in charge of setting up his tent to dry out. Jan’s birthday tent made a fun weekend one to remember.

I started writing this article to recommend the BSA 75th Anniversary Akela Eureka Tent, but, before I could finish it, I realized it was no longer available. I can, however, recommend a comparable Eureka tent that would be suitable for a Cub or Scout. The Eureka Apex 2 – 3 season tent is almost identical to the Akela Eureka tent. Both are approximately 36 square feet in size, ring and pin/pole assembly, and shock cord poles. They also weigh about the same at just over 5 pounds. And you can count on a Eureka tent to last.
