Average Age for Kids to Ride a Bike – Age to Teach Your Child to Ride a Bike
Learning to ride a two-wheeled children’s bike is best done in several stages. Ideally, the child should have a tricycle before they even learn to walk. It is important to remember that a tricycle should be used on flat services, preferably in a confined area, or even indoors. Remember that tricycles have no brakes and can easily roll away! Although children won’t learn to balance on a tricycle, they will learn to steer and pedal. Around the age of 2 and a half, you can start looking at children’s bikes with training wheels. Remember that there should always be a bit of “lean” in the bike. Adjust the training wheels to slightly different heights to force your child to balance.
Children learn balance at different ages. Generally, it is between 4 and 9 years. A great way to teach balance before conquering a kids bike is on a scooter. You can try teaching your child to ride a bike as young as 3 years old, but until they master balance, it will be frustrating for both of you. The age at which children can ride a bike depends on several factors. They need to be physically able and mentally ready to learn, their comfort level needs to be met, and it needs to be fun. If it’s not fun, your child won’t learn.
So your child is ready for adventure, and you’re ready for him to take off on his bike in the great outdoors? Don’t buy a specialized kids’ bike at this point, you just want them to learn to ride and they’ll outgrow it quickly. Here are some gradual steps you can take to help them on their way.
· Have your child sit on the bike. Make sure it’s not too small. He must be able to sit on the seat with both feet flat on the floor and his legs straight. Now get him to “scoot” the bike and get a sense of balance.
· Once he is on the scooter, have him pick up his feet and slow down a bit. You can give a little nudge from behind. This will force him to balance the bike. Have him practice applying the brakes. At a young age, pedal brakes are much easier for young children, as they may not have the hand strength for hand brakes.
· Does the balance seem good? Make him spin and steer. Maybe coast around a few obstacles.
· Do an audit. Can your child look up when coasting and flying? Can it spin well? Is there a smile on his face?
· Now let’s pedal. You’re probably going to have to help out a bit here. Never hold on to the handlebars, you want your child to steer. Do not hold the back of the seat, you are in balance for him. Hold his shoulders. It’s awkward, but he’ll feel the pressure of your hands as you balance him and learn to do it on his own.
Once your child is rolling, there are plenty of specialty bikes for kids available, from lightweight aluminum frames to mountain bikes to shifters. Have fun with it and remember the old adage “it’s like riding a bike…”
