Experience the Bright Lights of Broadway With a Trip to New York
Immortalized in legendary films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Godfather, as well as renowned for its range of iconic landmarks, New York City is a dazzling place to visit. Indeed, dubbed the city that never sleeps, it is unparalleled in the range of attractions and experiences on offer.
From Times Square to the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty and the sets of famous television shows, there is never a shortage of activities. In fact, with so much entertainment, many find it impossible to see and do everything they set out to do in one trip.
However, they claim that if you can only fit one thing into your schedule, it has to be Broadway! With a history dating back to the 1750s, it encompasses one of the city’s oldest entertainment traditions and has gained worldwide recognition.
The Theater District is located in midtown Manhattan where Broadway meets Seventh Avenue and encompasses the areas between West 42nd and West 53rd streets. Although the avenue, Broadway, stretches the length of Manhattan Island, the theater district earned the nickname Great White Way in the early 1900s after it was lit up with electric lights. This was remarkable at the time, since most of the United States did not have electricity on its streets.
During the 1920s and 1930s, there were over 80 theaters offering an array of different shows. Today, there are 39 theaters that are considered to meet Broadway’s criteria of having at least 500 seats and showing productions with “universal appeal”.
Broadway’s longest-running show, The Phantom of the Opera, is a must-see. Opened in 1988, it has won seven Tony Awards – America’s live theater highest honor – and has been seen by more than 100 million people.
The musical, which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on the novel by Gaston Leroux. He sees a masked ghost, who resides under the stage of the Paris Opera, working to transform the young soprano he fell in love with into a star.
For something a little lighter, Mamma Mia! is another great choice. Seen by approximately 30 million people since its debut in 1999, it is the story of a daughter determined to discover the identity of her father. Unbeknownst to her mother, she invites the three suitors she considers likely to her wedding. The entire musical is based on hits from former Swedish pop sensation ABBA.
There are a variety of musicals to discover, ranging from the most contemporary to the oldest, like the ones mentioned above! One thing’s for sure though, when you visit New York, it’s a must to try Broadway.
And as with the shows, there’s a range of affordable flights, plus plenty of New York hotels to choose from, so you can always be sure to find something to suit your tastes! So what are you waiting for? Try Broadway today!
