Symptoms of High-Functioning Autism
My earliest memory of autism is watching the movie “Rainman” and thinking about what happened to that brilliant kid on screen. On one side so talented on the other so restrained. My next close encounter with the disorder was when my daughter became a teacher for disabled children between the ages of seven and ten. I still remember that night when she came home from school, I looked at her face and knew something tragic must have happened. She told me about her experience with one of her students diagnosed with autism. Now she brings home knowledge and awareness that I otherwise would not have. As with all critical events, there is no single description of the disorder or its treatment.
Autism is in fact the central condition of a range of disorders, all of which share common characteristics and manifest in very different ways in each individual.
Autism is a major disability, affecting communication and interaction with others, but also with the world.
The degree of autism varies from severe to mild, but the consequence is always serious. As a result, an autistic person may have severe autism with severe additional learning difficulties, while others may have mild degrees of autism with normal or high levels of intelligence. The majority of people with autism have learning disabilities. Their language development is very variable. Some may have very good speech, although they lack complete comprehension, while a significant portion of people with autism will have no spoken language. Many may be oversensitive to noise, light, touch or smell, and underreact to pain.
The specific causes of autism are not known; however, we know that it is a disorder of biological origin affecting the development of the brain. Patterns of disordered behavior only appear when the child is between 18 months and 3 years old. Sometimes there is a period of seemingly normal development and then, between 18 months and 3 years, the child seems to withdraw and lose skills. We know that parents are not to blame for autism, but, in fact, are a child’s greatest resource.
As for the common signs of autism – these are social, communication and behavioral. Autism manifests in social settings, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, development of the imagination and resistance to change in a routine.
Here are examples of such behavior. The affected child shows indifference; he or she only participates in activities with others if the adult insists and helps him or her. Interactions in social settings are one-way. He or she indicates a need using an adult’s hand, does not play with other children, constantly talks about one topic, exhibits odd behavior. Echolalia is very common, when the child copies words. Laughing or giggling comes at the most inappropriate times. There is no eye contact, variety is not the spice of life, and there is a lack of creative play (pretend).
Some of the affected children can do certain things very well and very quickly, but this never involves social interaction. Early diagnosis of such a condition is crucial in order to minimize problems and maximize a person’s full potential.
I can’t say whether the autism explosion since 1980 was triggered by our ability to diagnose or by the actual changes in fetal and baby development caused by chemical overdose. I do know, however, that we have managed to register 77,000 artificial food additives since 1940 and that an average American consumes 14 pounds of chemicals with their food per year. The results of these statistics cannot be ignored by our body. Simple reality check: If you wouldn’t put something in your aquarium, don’t stick it in your body.
It may not eliminate autism, but it will certainly help our health and the world.
In the meantime, I would like to invite you to get more information on early detection of the disorder and ways to take control of the situation.
