Using Circle Time in ESL Classrooms
Many ESL teachers may not be familiar with the idea of circle time. It’s a part of the lesson, usually the first thing you do, where concepts are repeated daily (or weekly). It is typically used in preschool or elementary classrooms, but it can be very effective for ESL classroom use.
Having a daily (or weekly) circle time can help build the confidence of new ESL speakers. Because the concepts are repeated frequently, students quickly learn the correct answers. When used at the start of the lesson, it helps students feel more comfortable entering “English speaking mode” and ready to move on to less familiar topics.
Circle activities should be short and easy. There should be a few different concepts you will cover and the whole time should take no more than 15 minutes.
Circle Time Ideas for ESL Students
1. Short conversation. A short conversation consists of asking students a few simple and quick questions. Some examples are:
* What is your name?
* How are you?
* How old are you?
* What food do you like? (animal, fruit, color, etc.)
By providing a few possible answers, students can easily understand what is being asked of them. For example, I might say, “What animal do you like? Dog ? Cat ? Snake ? Make sure students respond in complete sentences. As students grow, they may be able to ask other students questions.
2.ABCs. It’s also a good time to review the ABC. You can sing the ABC song or focus on one letter. If you focus on one letter, make sure they understand the sound it makes. See how many words they can think of that start with that letter. An easy way to do this is to ask them to go around the class. They will notice many words they know just by looking around.
3. Days of the week. Review the days of the week. You can sing a song that does this. Then ask them, “What day is it today?” », « What day was it yesterday? and “What day will tomorrow be?”
4. Months of the year. Review the months of the year. You can also sing a song for it. You can ask them what month it is now. Children also like to know in which month their birthday falls.
5. Counting. Counting can sometimes take time, but it’s worth going back to once in a while.
6. Weather. Review the different types of weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, etc.). Ask students what the weather is like today.
Obviously, you probably don’t have enough time to go through each of these ideas every circle time, but you can easily choose two or three to do in each lesson.
