Ski Instructor Jobs – Turning a Passion for Skiing Into Paid Work
Confucius said it well: “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life. It’s a motto we should all follow because enjoying life is what it’s all about. When you think about your job, do you dread it? Or will you sleep at night excited from work? If you want a job that will make you smile, consider becoming a ski instructor.
Getting a job as a ski instructor is not difficult. You don’t have to be the best skier in the world. In fact, the most important thing is to be kind and to be able to teach. When it comes to getting a job as a ski instructor, a friendly Kansas intermediate skier is often a much better instructor than a perfect Ivy Leaguer expert skier with no personality. Anyone, at any age, can be a ski instructor. Professional ski instructors return year after year and love their careers. But even if that’s not your career, it’s equally satisfying to be a weekend instructor teaching for extra income or a student working on holidays to earn a free pass.
It is estimated that 10-12% of the US population visits ski resorts each year. Of these enthusiasts, 75% are skiers. This includes adults, children, teenagers and adapted skiers. And they want both group lessons and private lessons. But what’s really important is that at every resort – from Vail, CO to Beech Mountain, NC – ski instructors are in demand. Often during busy seasons, resorts cannot find enough ski instructors!
So how do you get one of these coveted jobs? First, decide which mountain you want to work on. Then, contact human resources before the season, online or in person. Or try talking to a ski instructor – you’ll get all the info you need and more. Once you’ve contacted your resort of choice, you may need to go for an interview, which means you’ll ski around the mountain and chat on a chairlift with the person responsible for the rental. Most resorts require no experience and will train you in what you need to know, making you both a better teacher and a better skier.
If a country has a ski resort, it also has an association of ski instructors, such as PSIA, BASI or CSIA. Being a certified ski instructor will generally increase your pay rate and increase your chances of getting hired. If you want to have certification on your resume before you apply, there are several instructor certification courses you can find by searching Google.
When it comes to skiing jobs, ski instructors are at the top of the pay scale. Many people come to resorts to shovel snow or work as lift operators. They often barely earn enough to eat. Although ski instructors don’t exactly make the salary of a doctor, they do quite well compared to their ski brethren. Plus, once in a while, a satisfied “student” will shake your hand and you’ll find a tip – helping you with your next fill-up or your next night on the town. Some ski instructors even earn enough in one season to take on the whole summer!
So, what is the job of a ski instructor? Ski every day – up to 150 days per season! Your “work” will always be within the limits of your skiing, and every day can be different. Friday can be spent scaling cliffs, getting lost in bottomless powder or carving a new groomed run with another expert skier. On Saturday, you could teach a group of 5-year-olds how to stop, but also how to snowball. On Sundays, you can sip hot chocolate at the lodge and do some shopping with your private client. On Monday you could teach in the half-pipe. Tuesday can be spent helping a student learn to stand up without any help. Then Wednesday and Thursday are your days off and you will do the same thing you did at “work” on Friday. As a ski instructor, you are guaranteed to have a smile on your face and do what you love… skiing!
So if you love skiing and are looking for a laid back job that saves you from being in a cabin, try ski instructor. People will be green with envy when you tell them you’re a ski instructor. And that on your days off, you do the same thing as at “work”, but you just don’t wear your uniform! Few people can say that.
