How to Choose a Youth Baseball Bat
Choosing a baseball bat can be quite a difficult task with all the options available. I’ve been a baseball coach for many years and in recent years I’ve noticed “golfer syndrome” in baseball.
Many golfers don’t work on their game as much as they would like, so they believe that by buying the best technology in golf clubs, their game will automatically improve. There are super fiber shafts or oversized heads that cost hundreds of dollars for each club.
Unfortunately, young baseball players have understood this syndrome. Technology can certainly help, but it is not the answer. Players have become too used to relying on technology and it gives them an excuse to get lazy and they forget the real way – practice, practice and practice! In the early 90s, several studies indicated that the lighter was better for baseball bats. As a result of these studies, it was impossible to find a bat with a differential of less than -8 when purchasing juvenile bats.
These studies have completely ignored the kinesiology of the body. They just focused on the bat and the ball. I read a great example that explains how it’s not a linear relationship. If a batter uses a 20oz baseball bat and then switches to a 19oz bat, that doesn’t mean he’ll swing 5% faster! The hitter also loses 5% mass and he won’t be able to hit hard enough to make up for the loss.
In all my years of training, I have rarely noticed a difference in the sticks used. There is maybe a 5% difference between old and new bats. The difference between bats 1-2 years apart is such a small fraction of difference.
After many years of analyzing my bats, I suggest buying the heaviest bat your child can swing with speed. Make sure the size of the bat matches little league rules of 2 1/4 inches in diameter. A good estimate for a 10 year old is 29 to 32 and -7 to -10 oz from the selected length. A typical 12 year old will probably fit around 32/25.
Using certain bats can also come back to hurt your kids later when they are getting ready for the varsity prom. Each bat must be BESR rated to determine the speed of the ball after it hits. This helps protect the pitchers. That said, almost all BESR bats are created the same way.
In conclusion, we know that there are many bats. You better spend the money on batting lessons rather than an advanced bat. If your child knows how to hit the ball, the bat won’t matter as much as its shape.
