Where Are The Worst Barbecue Chefs?
It’s an annual pilgrimage that usually takes place the second weekend in June and is considered Britain’s biggest sporting event held on foreign soil. Thousands of perfectly rational Englishmen (and a few ladies) squeeze a small amount of belongings into a classic or performance sports car and head south.
It’s a time of year when the cargo on cross-Channel ferries is actually more valuable than the ferry itself. Many locals line the road and watch the regular procession to the place affectionately known as La Sarthe. If you haven’t understood it, I’m talking about the city of Le Mans, 3 hours by land from the northern coast of France, where the most famous car race in the world called Les Vingt Quatre Heures Du Mans is held. If you don’t speak French, it’s the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race for you and me.
I try to go there every year and the first item that gets packed is my portable BBQ. There is a fantastic atmosphere among the crowd and during qualifying and the race there are many barbecues, wine corks, explosions of fireworks and a general party atmosphere. Food is an important part for me and that’s probably why my classic car is not only beautiful but also extremely practical.
Many fans have so little space that they buy their barbecues when they get there and these can range from a full-fledged barbie kettle to those disposable barbecue trays.
Whatever the style of barbecue, one thing remains common to all my friends and neighbors at the campsite: they do not know how to cook. For this reason, I decided to put together my own list of Le Mans BBQ recipes to make sure I set a good example.
One of the menus this year I’m going to start with the full English and for that I’m going to have to bring the bacon with me because bacon in France is just not the same but that said I can’t wait to put French sausages with it. Finally sausages stuffed with meat rather than rusks and breadcrumbs. The big challenge in doing Full English is of course the egg and to do it right I fry them on the charcoal barbecue grill in homemade aluminum trays. A little homemade barbecue sauce and you’ve got the perfect way to start your race day.
I have already expressed my pleasure to taste French sausages again and there are plenty of others like Merguez (spicy) and Sausages De Toulouse (herbs and garlic) which will go very well in a baguette for a nice variation barbecue on the hot dog. Just avoid sausages called andouillette unless you like tripe!
For dinner, I’m going to keep my Le Mans BBQ very simple with a boneless shoulder of lamb sprinkled with paprika and grilled with a salad of fire-roasted red peppers.
I hope some of my Le Mans BBQ recipes will rub off on my fellow racing enthusiasts…….well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
