PES Games – A History Of Pro Evolution Soccer Part 1

Pro Evolution Soccer is a football (soccer) video game with legions of fans around the world. PES games are produced for all major consoles, including PS3, XBOX 360, Wii and PC, and are distributed across five continents, making it a global powerhouse.

Pro Evolution Soccer games have now been around since 1996, when single title Goal Storm launched the Konami franchise. Along with the Electronic Arts (EA) FIFA series, the two games went head-to-head and dominated the football video game scene throughout this period. PES games have always focused on playability and resemblance to real football, while FIFA has mostly been “official”, sacrificing gameplay for licensing and an arcade game style.

The franchise has undergone several name changes in Europe and North America, at the moment the games are called PES followed by next year to the year of release, so the latest installment of this year released in October will call PES 2013.

Goal Storm’s initial name was only kept for a year, before being changed to ISS Pro in 1997. Then it changed to ISS Pro 98 followed by ISS Pro Evolution in May 1999, making it the first time “Evolution” appeared in the title. At this point in the game’s history, updates were not released at regular intervals and the first time I discovered the game was in 2001 when ISS Pro Evolution 2 arrived. .

Unlike Europe and North America, in Japan – the home of Konami, Pro Evo has kept the “Winning Eleven” moniker since its inception, with the prefix of “World Soccer” added after the first few years.

What made Pro Evo different from other soccer games was the way the game played. The view of the action was sideways and the ball could be kicked in any direction, unlike FIFA games in which any directional shot would always fly towards the goal, making the game appear to be staged.

Previous games that stuck to soccer, such as Sensible Soccer, had top-down views, which meant you played by running up or down the TV/monitor screen. Graphics were limited in the 1990s, but FIFA and Pro Evo started to change all that – taking their respective games in different directions in terms of gameplay.

From the start, Pro Evolution Soccer never had any naming rights for players or teams, so from the start of the franchise, an editing option was created in-game. This allowed savvy players to edit players and teams, replacing fake names with real ones. I remember spending hours recreating football strips and renaming all players, until the PES fan forums started a trend towards option files and max players.

These saved option files were created by groups of fans and then uploaded via the Internet to forum pages and download sites, so that all fans could quickly save and rename all players in the game. Now they had better looking players, kits and real names but it still didn’t compare to official fifa licenses but it wasn’t necessary players just wanted a likeness because it’s always the game that brings back fans year after year at Pro Evo.

This game was perfected over the next few years when ISS Pro Evolution 2 became Pro Evolution Soccer in 2001. The game was constantly modified with AI (artificial intelligence) making the game smarter and game speeds changed regularly sometimes speeding up and then slowing down for the next release, as Konami tried to find the balance. Tackle became more of an art, instead of just smashing buttons and practice modes were introduced to allow players to practice before doing things in real games.

Threads on the PES forums hinted at FIFA literally getting coy with Konami over licensing issues, forcing Konami to make fake team names even more obscure (Manchester United was no longer “Man Red” , they were now “Aragon!”). This provided new challenges for editing masters and fans have always hoped that Konami would fight for the next game’s licenses – to date this has still not happened considering PES 2013.

In Pro Evolution Soccer 2, commentators Peter Brackley (voice of Football Italia on Channel 4) and Trevor Brooking were featured to add a new dimension to the realism stakes. Hearing someone famous talk about your team during gameplay sounded exciting in principle, but the limitations of technology meant it could quickly become boring, monotonous and often irrelevant.

In comparison, music was introduced on the menu screen, with Queen singing “We Will Rock you” and “We Are The Champions” among other artists and tracks. The music in the menus was a welcome addition as you could very often spend long periods of time negotiating these pages, especially if you were editing. It’s a feature that Konami has maintained and improved upon over the years, right up to today, often using small, unfamiliar or unfamiliar bands and giving them a platform to reach people with their music.

In Part 2 of PES Games, we’ll look at the ongoing battle with FIFA, the move towards online and high-definition gaming, and how PES hopes to regain its soccer video game crown with PES 2013.
